To clean a Zoom recording after a meeting, start with a copy of the saved audio and listen to the people who matter in the clip. A steady fan behind clear speech may be worth a noise-reduction preview. Echo, a connection dropout or two people talking at once are different problems.
Are you fixing a saved recording or a live call?
This guide is about a file after the meeting has ended. CleanMyAudio processes a supported file in your browser; it is not a microphone plugin and does not change what participants hear during a live Zoom call. For the next meeting, check Zoom's own microphone and noise-suppression settings and make a short test before recording.
Meeting software may already have processed audio during the call. If speech pumps, cuts in and out, or sounds metallic in the original, another denoising pass may make the problem more noticeable. Compare before assuming that every defect is background noise.
Which recording file should you start with?
First find out whether the meeting was recorded to a computer or to Zoom's cloud. For a computer recording, Zoom's documented default is a Zoom folder inside Documents; the location can be changed. Zoom also describes how to find recordings in its desktop app and open their file location. For a cloud recording you can access, open the recording in Zoom's web portal and download it. The exact options depend on the recording and your access. See Zoom's guides to computer recordings and cloud recordings.
Keep that download unchanged. Zoom identifies M4A as audio-only and MP4 as video in its recording format guide. If separate speaker audio files are available, listen to each one to find which track needs attention. An M4A extension alone does not guarantee that a file uses a supported codec.
A video file and an audio-only file are not interchangeable. The audio workflow accepts WAV, MP3 and supported AAC-in-M4A files, subject to the stated limits. Some meeting videos need conversion in a separate editor before the audio workflow can use them. Do not rename an extension and assume the codec has changed.
How do you clean a short meeting excerpt?
- In an editor, make a copy of the relevant passage. Include a normal sentence and a noisy sentence from each important speaker.
- Confirm the audio is no larger than 25 MiB and no longer than five minutes; both limits apply. WAV has additional encoding requirements, and ALAC in M4A is unsupported.
- Open Denoise audio, choose the file and create the preview. It covers up to the first 30 seconds.
- Compare Original and Processed at a consistent volume. If the supported clip is longer than the preview, choose Process full audio before downloading the full WAV.
For a clip shorter than 30 seconds, the preview covers the whole clip. If the answer you need is 18 minutes into the meeting, first select it in an audio editor, include a little surrounding speech and export the selection as a separate file. Audacity's export guide explains its selection option. Confirm the excerpt meets both limits before processing it.
Keep the original and use a full editor when you need to work across the entire meeting. Splitting a long call into many pieces and joining them again can create audible joins and extra work.
Why does another cleanup pass sometimes sound worse?
Listen to sentence starts and quiet endings. If an earlier process has already removed parts of a word, reducing the remaining background cannot restore them. Another pass may add a watery quality or make pauses open and close abruptly. Stop and use the original if the words become harder to follow.
See why noise removal can sound robotic for a listening checklist. The sample library provides labeled controlled examples, not a simulation of a particular Zoom call.
What about uneven levels or overlapping voices?
Steady-noise reduction does not automatically balance every participant. Adjust levels and make edits in a suitable editor, preferably with separate tracks. It also cannot reliably separate simultaneous voices from a mixed file. If an essential answer is missing, a follow-up recording may be more useful than repeated processing.
Questions about meeting audio
Can I clean during the meeting?
No. The browser tool works on an existing file after recording.
Can I clean a full hour-long call?
Not in one file with this tool. Its audio limit is five minutes and 25 MiB.
Does quieter background mean clearer words?
Not always. Compare the spoken passages and keep the version that preserves the message.
